Project description

One of YouTube’s most requested features, the mobile/tablet queue gives users more control over their watch experience. For the first time, viewers are able to line up what they’d like to watch on a session by session basis.

Queueing is drove massive user delight with hundreds of users sharing amazing feedback of the feature on Reddit, social media & gFeedback.

This heroic effort required collaboration across 8+ teams over two years.

Designing a seamless queueing experience that meets the expectations of our diverse user base was a challenge.

Queueing interacts with multiple features across the app and must work seamlessly on all surfaces. Getting it right required us to deeply understand industry standards and YouTube users’ specific needs, which required extensive research (oldest one dating back 14 years). On top of this we had to completely redesign YouTube’s collection playback UX which was 7+ years old!

Tap on the overflow menu of a video lock up and tap “Play next in queue” or “Play last in queue”, notice that a queue is created.

The mobile queue project also encompassed several novel collection consumption improvements.
